The history of 419 in Nigeria

Well, even in foreign countries, fingers are easily pointed at Nigerians because the outside world believe we are "419ers" Did you know that the first exponent of 419 in Nigeria was not a Nigerian? "On 18 December 1920, a certain Mr. Crentsil, a former employee of the Marine Department of the colonial government in Lagos, wrote an extraordinary letter to a contact in the British colony of the Gold Coast, today's Ghana.... It is ironic that the first known Four One Nine fraudster known to history was not a Nigerian at all, but rather a Ghanaian.  Crentsil seems to have written a number of similar letters, each time offering to provide magical services on payment of a fee.  In December 1921, he was charged by the police with three counts under various sections of the criminal code including section 419... But Crentsil was in luck; the magistrate presiding over his case discharged him with caution on the first count and acquitted him on the two others for la...

Google Doodle celebrates Zimbabwe's Priceless musical instrument - The Mbria

Many people kept asking me what is usually the event on Google Page's feed and I've responded that it's called "The Doodle"  This is meant to give education to many of it's users and today isn't an exception  Today, Google helped Zimbabwe Kickstart her Cultural Week with the documentation of a vital musical instrument callne the MBIRA   This instrument was recorded to have survived for a thousand (1000) years in the culture of Zimbabwe  This instrument Originated from the southern part of Africa and has played a very important role in the culture of Zimbabwe's Shona people.  Mbira is made of a hardwood board otherwise known as GWARIVA which is usually fixed with some metals of strings sound keys. A large hollow gourd (deze) provides amplification, and materials such as bottle caps or beads can be affixed to the soundboard to create the instrument’s signature buzzing sound.

PLEASE READ TILL THE END  If you hang around the barber shop long enough you're gonna get a haircut  Who are you helping at the moment ? Who are you touching their lives at the moment ? It doesn't have to cost you millions but you can choose to lay off the burden of #100 biscuits off your neighbors kids  Chadwick Boseman told the whole world at an award ceremony how Denzel Washington paid for his tuition fees  Denzel never knew this till Chadwick became a major star to reckon with in the industry, he (Denzel) bursted in to tears in the open  This made to conclude that the little things we do today will pile up at our door steps in the nearest future....  It could be words of encouragement or even little tutorials within your community but sure thing is whoever you're doing things for will always come back to remember you in ways you won't expect....  Don't forget that you are the reason many people may survive but if you tilt your head othe...

THE IGBO LANDING STORY OF 1803

The "Igbo Landing" story of 1803 In May 1803, around 75 Igbo slaves who were being transported by sea revolted by capsizing their ship and drowned themselves while singing in Igbo, a song that translates to ... "the water spirit brought us. The water spirit will take us home".  (Mmụọ mmiri du anyi bịa, mmụọ mmiri ga-edu anyi laa). Igbo Landing is a historic site at Dunbar Creek on St. Simons Island, Glynn County, Georgia. In 1803 one of the largest mass suicides of enslaved... people took place when Igbo captives from what is now Nigeria were taken to the Georgia coast. In May 1803, the Igbo and other West African captives arrived in Savannah Georgia, on the slave ship, the Wanderer. They were purchased for an average of $100 each by slave merchants... John Couper and Thomas Spalding for forced labor on their plantations in Simons Island. The chained slaves were packed under deck of a coastal vessel, the York, which would take them to St. Simons Island. ...

MC OLUOMO IS NOT WORTHY OF ANYTHING

As we will have it slit down our throats till we almost choked on it, veteran braodacster brought MUSILIU AKINSANYA AKA Mc Oluomo to the public via her show where he (Mc Oluomo) dished out some ideas on bringing ease to our roads in Lagos, but one Twitter user had this to say : THREAD Either deliberate or not, whatever it is MC Oluomo got going with the PR stunt is impressive. But it’ll require a lot more to stop me from associating him or NURTW with bloodshed and a reign of terror. Childhood days in Isolo, my mother had a shop at Afariogun in Oshodi. Newly retired, she invested her gratuity in a fabric shop in Oshodi. Every now and then, she & friends will close shop for days & lose income, because fighting in Oshodi between gangs of MC Oluomo & his rivals. As a student having to commute Oshodi frequently, I was robbed. Till 2019, my colleagues living in the Oshodi area worked & lived in fear at intervals due to brutal clashes and murders of alleged NURTW g...

WHERE IS CYNTHIA MORGAN ?

If there is anything in dancehall genre of music in Nigeria we can't exempt one person who had infused extraordinary energy in the past years Just like Goldie Harvey of blessed memory, Cynthia Morgan came in to limelight and gave us great energetic dancehall music that rocked our parties  She did tracks like "I'm taken" "German Juice" in the midst of many, we will not forget to mention that she few awards too at the Headies. Question now is WHERE IS CYNTHIA MORGAN ?  Some said she is depressed while some said she's broke, a very good account of Jude Okoye was recorded last year when he said Cynthia has been depressed for a while.  We hope to see our Naija Queen of Dancehall again on the dance floor doing her thing.

THE WAR BETWEEN GOVT OF ECUADOR AND GOATS - A HILARIOUS READ

It will rather be seen as "USELESS" if I as a full blown man is seen as chasing GOATS around. But it will sound more absurd if a whole Government of a country goes to war with Goats  Today we dug on this particular Twitter thread and though funny but it was an eye opener  HOW THE GOVERNMENT OF ECUADOR WENT TO WAR WITH GOATS Fun fact : One of the funniest "real life is stranger than fiction" stories ,for me is when the government of Ecuador essentially had a war with goats . Yes. The animals. This is a thread on how it happened.   A little background on goats . They are , despite belief, actually quite intelligent and very adaptable. They have the ability to survive in almost all climes and a very good reproductive rate. They have been shown to have quite high cognitive ability and learning.  The Galapagos islands are one of the world's most unique biodiverse locations, and where Charles Darwin went to develop the theory of evolution. They are located...

THROW BACK - THE FUEL PRICING DEBATE: OUR STORY BY PROF YEMI OSHIBAJO

THE FUEL PRICING DEBATE: OUR STORY I have read the various observations about the fuel pricing regime and the attendant issues generated.  You have all certainly raised strong points.   The most important issue of course is how to shield the poor from the worst effects of the policy.  I will hopefully address that in another note. Permit me an explanation of the policy. First, the real issue  is not a removal of subsidy. At $40 a barrel there isn't much of a subsidy to remove.  In any event, the President is probably one of the most convinced pro-subsidy advocates.  What happened is as follows: our local consumption of fuel is almost entirely imported. The NNPC exchanges crude from its joint venture share to provide about 50% of local fuel consumption. The remaining 50% is imported by major and independent marketers.  These marketers up until three months ago sourced their foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria at the offici...

HOW KYARI WAS INSPIRED TO TAKE UP HIS ROLE AS CoS - ADEJUMOKE ANDEM - OSU (A MUST READ)

My latest read : " The Gatekeepers": How the White House Chiefs of Staff define every Presidency. It’s written by Chris Whipple. “Understanding how Government really works is more important now than ever before. This is an enlightening work of history with lessons for our immediate future “ - (James Fallows, Former White House Speechwriter). With the lockdown, in the middle of my life routines and work, I did a lot of Netflix binging and reading. My friends would always ask me what next to watch on Netflix. One of them was quite surprised I had not seen SCANDAL starring Kerry Washington (Olivia Pope) The story is about the US Presidency. I quickly fell in love with this series of about 7 seasons. I had also just watched Madam Secretary.  Anyway, in the course of watching Scandal the former Chief of Staff to President Buhari passed on. I read loads and loads of tributes on him, the good, the bad and the ugly. What piqued my interest was that he was a voracious read...

THE SYMBOLS OF THE NIGERIAN ARMY FLAG - MEANING AND REPRESENTATION

MEANING OF THE SYMBOLS ON THE                FLAG OF THE NIGERIAN ARMY From a force of 18,000 in infantry battalions and supporting units at the end of World War II in 1945, the strength of the Nigerian Army rose to around 126,000 in three divisions by the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.  In terms of doctrine, the task of the Federal Nigerian Army has not changed; its task remains to close with and defeat an organised enemy. The Nigerian Army uses a flag that has three vertical stripes (red, black and red). On it is the emblem of an Eagle, a six-pointed star and the Arabic text.  We took a deep look through HistoryVille  at the symbols and their meanings. The flag is flown at the Nigerian Army Headquarters, Abuja. THE EAGLE It represents the graceful power of the Nigerian Army. Just like an eagle, the Nigerian Army maintains keen surveillance of the country during times of peace and in prepare...
